The term gerrymander came from Elbridge Gerry’s name. When he served as governor of Massachusetts, Gerry signed a bill that redrew several congressional districts in a manner that appeared to favor Democratic-Republicans. A newspaper editor coined the term gerrymandering to refer to this process of redrawing voting district lines for political purposes.
