Millard Fillmore

Presidency

What foreign country did Fillmore try to open trade with?

Fillmore sent Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan to open up trade with this closed empire. Japan officially opened up trade with the United States under Fillmore’s successor, Franklin Pierce.
