John Quincy Adams, a Harvard graduate, recoiled at the idea that his alma mater was going to give President Jackson an honorary degree. Adams, who did not attend Jackson’s inauguration, wrote Harvard’s president: “I would not be present to witness her disgrace in conferring her highest literary honors upon a barbarian who could not write a sentence of grammar and hardly could spell his own name.”
