What member of Lincoln’s cabinet later became a Supreme Court Justice? |
Lincoln’s secretary of the treasury was Salmon P. Chase, a man who had challenged Lincoln for the 1860 Republican nomination for the presidency. Chase served several years as Lincoln’s secretary of the treasury before resigning in June 1864. Lincoln later nominated him to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served until his death in 1873. Chase, a former member of the Free Soil Party, was an ardent abolitionist.
