What member of Polk’s cabinet was a holdover from the Tyler administration? |
James K. Polk did keep one member of President Tyler’s cabinet on his own cabinet: John Y. Mason. Polk probably kept Mason because the two knew each other at the University of North Carolina. Mason served as President Tyler’s secretary of the navy. In the Polk administration, Mason served as U.S. attorney general and then secretary of the navy again.
