Arcena Smith, a cousin to his mother, lived with the family, as did Rutherford’s uncle Sardis Birchard. Sardis, a lifelong bachelor, was a successful businessman and banker. He helped rear Rutherford and served as his mentor. Sardis paid for Rutherford’s education and became his guardian.
