Harrison was a member of the Whig Party and opposed many tenets of Andrew Jackson’s Democratic Party. Harrison was one of several Whig candidates who vied for the presidency following Jackson’s two terms. He lost to Jackson’s hand-picked successor, Martin Van Buren, in the election of 1836.
