What political position did Roosevelt have before running for president?

Roosevelt served as governor of New York from 1929 until 1933. He defeated Albert Ottinger for his first term and Charles H. Tuttle for his second term. He created a governmental agency to assist the rising number of unemployed persons in the state. He also furthered his progressive agenda by reducing work hours and expanding the coverage of the state workers’ compensation law.
