George W. Bush

What revelation nearly led to Bush’s defeat in the presidential election?

Close to the 2000 presidential election, it was revealed that Bush had been arrested for a driving under the influence charge on September 4, 1976, near his family’s vacation home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Bush pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge, paid a fine, and had his drivers’ license in Maine suspended for two years. A radio station in Maine reported the news of the arrest only one week before the presidential election. In response, Bush admitted that he drank too much earlier in his life. He said that he gave up drinking on his fortieth birthday after waking up with a hangover.
