Early Life and Family

What was Garfield’s early education?

He attended a local school in Orange, Ohio, before attending Geauga Academy in Chester, Ohio. In 1851, he entered the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute in Hiram, Ohio, which was run by the Disciples of Christ, the church his family followed. While attending school, he worked as a janitor and teacher at local district schools in nearby cities.
