What was Johnson’s next position after military governor?

In 1864, Lincoln and party leaders selected Johnson to run as Lincoln’s vice president. Lincoln was a Republican and Johnson was a Democrat. While it was (and is) extremely unusual for running mates to come from different parties, Lincoln believed that Johnson as a Southern, pro-war Democrat would help ensure his reelection.
