President Roosevelt named Taft as his secretary of war. As head of the War Department, Taft supervised work on the Panama Canal and met with Japanese leaders about the Russo-Japanese War. He quelled a potential crisis in Cuba, even serving as provisional governor for a time in 1906. In these positions, Taft showed his characteristic excellent work ethic and good diplomacy skills.
