Wilson defeated Republican Vivian M. Lewis to become governor of New Jersey. As governor, Wilson sought the passage of the state’s first workers’ compensation law and a public utilities commission that would regulate rates. He also sought to reform election law in the state by supporting a law that called for direct party primaries and sought to reduce the power wielded by party bosses.
