Samuel Knox was a land surveyor and landowner who prospered after moving his family to Columbia, Tennessee, in 1806. He later opened a general store that was quite successful and led to other business opportunities. Samuel had an interest in a steamboat operation and was a director in a local bank. His wealth enabled him to fund his son James’s education.
