What was his father’s occupation?

Richard Taylor was a distinguished military veteran, planter, and politician. He served in the Revolutionary War, reaching the level of lieutenant colonel. Just after his son Zachary was born, Richard moved his family from Virginia to Kentucky, where he eventually acquired more than ten thousand acres. He served as a justice of the peace and held office in the Kentucky legislature.
