Political Offices

What was his first political office?

He won a place in the New York state assembly in 1882, representing Albany. He won reelection twice in 1883 and 1884. While an assemblyman, he attracted public attention by targeting a corrupt judge named T.R. Westbrook, who aided financier Jay Gould. Although Westbrook was eventually cleared of the investigation, his image suffered, and he may have committed suicide.
