Early Career

What was his military service record?

Ford enlisted in the navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces. Ford served in the navy from 1942 to 1946, rising from ensign to lieutenant commander. He worked as a gunnery officer aboard the USS Monterey, which saw action in the South Pacific. During his career, he garnered numerous medals for his combat service. He also coached football and boxing during his navy tenure.
