Early Career

What was his military service?

Kennedy served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1945, rising to the rank of lieutenant. His PT boat was attacked by a Japanese destroyer in August 1943. He managed to swim to safety, saving the life of a fellow soldier in the process. He won a Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.
