Political Offices

What was supposed to be Van Buren’s next position after secretary of state?

Van Buren’s next position was supposed to be minister to England. Jackson nominated him to the position but the Senate refused to confirm his nomination. Prominent senators such as John C. Calhoun—Jackson’s former vice president—Henry Clay and Daniel Webster actively voted against him and galvanized opposition against the nomination. The nomination was tied and the tie-breaking vote went to Calhoun, as leader of the Senate.
