The Liberty Party was a short-lived mid-nineteenth-century political party that supported abolitionism. Formed by members who broke away from William Lloyd Garrison’s American Anti-Slavery Society (1833–70), the Liberty Party nominated James G. Birney for president in 1840 and 1844. The party never quite got off the ground, and in 1848 members joined with other like-minded leaders to form the Free-Soil Party.
