What was the first election that he won?

Harding ran for county auditor in Marion County, an area that generally voted Democratic. As a result, the Republican Harding lost his very first election.

Harding won his first election when he ran for the Ohio State Senate in 1899. He served two terms in the Senate until 1903. He later became majority leader. He gave the eulogy in the state Senate for President William McKinley after the assassination.
