Powers was sentenced to three years in prison followed by seven years of hard labor by Soviet authorities. In February 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union exchanged prisoners. The United States turned over Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, who was really KGB Colonel Vilyam Fisher, for Powers and American student Frederic Pryor.
