When did he become a state legislator?

He won election to the New Hampshire legislature in 1829 when he was only twenty-four years old. He served four terms in the state legislature, including a stint as speaker from 1831 to 1832. He left the state legislature to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1833.
