Lincoln won his first political race in 1834 as a Whig candidate running for the Illinois legislature. He served three more terms. He roomed with Springfield lawyer John T. Stuart, who further encouraged Lincoln’s study of the law. In 1836, he became chairman of the finance committee and advocated for a series of measures that improved the state’s railroad and canal systems.
