Truman served in the U.S. Senate from 1935 until 1945, when he became vice president under Franklin D. Roosevelt. With assistance from Pendergast, he defeated Republican incumbent Roscoe Conkling Patterson to win the seat. As a senator, Truman vigorously supported FDR’s New Deal programs. He later served as chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program.
