He served at various posts through the next decade, including Madison Barracks in Sacketts Harbor, New York, Detroit, San Francisco, and Fort Vancouver in the Oregon Territory. Though promoted to captain in 1853, he did not enjoy his service at Fort Vancouver and resigned from the military in 1854.
