Woodrow Wilson

Presidency

Where did President Wilson stand on race relations?

President Wilson did not do very well on race relations. Allegedly, his favorite movie was D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation Woods, formerly a judge on the 5th Circuit, served only six years on the Court (1915), which glorified the Ku Klux Klan. He did not overrule members of his cabinet who adopted segregationist policies. He did not send in federal troops when race riots occurred in East St. Louis, Missouri, and Chicago, Illinois.
