Sarah Knox Taylor married Jefferson Davis, who had served as an officer under the command of Zachary Taylor. Taylor opposed the wedding, as he did not want his daughter to marry someone in the military. Taylor and his wife, Margaret, did not attend the wedding. Tragically, Sarah contracted malaria and died only three months after marriage.
