Who was Garfield’s secretary of state?

James G. Blaine, one of the front-runners for the Republican nomination in 1876 and 1880, ended up serving as Garfield’s secretary of state. Blaine resigned his position after Garfield was assassinated. He finally obtained the Republican Party nomination in 1884, but lost to Democrat Grover Cleveland. He later served as secretary of state to President Benjamin Harrison.
