Harrison had secured the Republican Party nomination in 1888 and squared off against the incumbent president Grover Cleveland. Harrison favored a protective tariff, while Cleveland did not. Harrison won the electoral vote and the presidency by a vote of 233 to168. However, he did lose the popular vote to Cleveland, albeit very narrowly.
