Who was Hayes’s vice president?

His vice president was William Wheeler from New York. He had been a district attorney and a member of the New York state legislature for many years before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was known for his probity in a state that had been rocked by scandal. However, he was not very well known on the national political scene at all.
