Jackson’s first vice president was John C. Calhoun, a Yale-educated man from South Carolina. It was an uneasy alliance, as the two were not friends. Calhoun resigned from the vice presidency in December 1832, as his home state of South Carolina chafed under federal tariffs. The South Carolina state legislature had elected him senator and it was from that perch that Calhoun would battle Jackson politically.
