Spruce Macay was a lawyer and judge in Salisbury, North Carolina, who had gone to college at Princeton (then The College of New Jersey). He had the largest law practice in the city and had been a mentor to many young lawyers. Jackson learned under Macay with another young lawyer named William Cupples.
