James A. Garfield

Presidency

Who was his lone U.S. Supreme Court appointee?

Garfield nominated Stanley Matthews of Ohio to the U.S. Supreme Court. President Rutherford B. Hayes originally had sent Matthews’s name to the Senate, but the Senate refused to act. Garfield resubmitted Matthews’s name and the Senate confirmed him by one vote. Matthews served on the Court until his death in 1889.
