Who was the original front-runner for the Republican ticket in the 1860 presidential election?

William H. Seward—who would later serve as Lincoln’s secretary of state—was the front-runner. Seward edged Lincoln by more than seventy votes on the first ballot. But Lincoln gradually gained support and captured the nomination.
