His opponents were his familiar nemesis Stephen A. Douglas of the Democratic Party, John C. Breckenridge from the Southern Democratic Party or the National Democratic Party, and John C. Bell of the Constitutional Union Party. Lincoln captured 180 electoral votes, Breckenridge obtained 72, Bell garnered 39, and Douglas (who was second in the popular vote) managed only 12 electoral votes.
