Monroe had the opportunity to nominate only one person to the U.S. Supreme Court even though he was a two-term president. He nominated Smith Thompson, who had served on the New York State Supreme Court and as United States secretary of the navy under Monroe. Thompson served on the high Court for twenty years until his death in 1843.
