William Henry Harrison

Presidency

Whom did Harrison defeat for the presidency in the election of 1840?

Harrison got revenge against Martin Van Buren for his loss in the Election of 1836. Van Buren’s chances dimmed after the Panic of 1837 and the economic depression that befell the country. Harrison managed to win the support of the Whig Party and carried the election handily, particularly the electoral vote count. He won the electoral vote 234 to 60.
