Whom did Nixon defeat to win the 1960 Republican nomination for president?

Nixon was the favorite to win the Republican nomination given that he had served as vice president for eight years. Some speculated that New York governor Nelson Rockefeller could pose a formidable challenge, but he endorsed Nixon instead of running against him. Nixon won on the first ballot with 1,321 votes to only 10 for Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona.
