Nixon entered the 1968 Republican nomination as the front-runner, but there were some serious contenders. They included Nelson Rockefeller, the governor of New York who would later be President Gerald Ford’s vice president, and Ronald Reagan, the governor of California who would win the presidency in 1980. Nixon was nominated on the first ballot with more than 690 votes.
