Whom did Taylor defeat to win the election of 1848?

Taylor, the candidate for the Whig party, defeated Democrat Lewis Cass by an electoral vote count of 163 to 127. Cass had lost the Democratic nomination to James K. Polk in 1844. A senator from Michigan, Cass later served as secretary of state for the fifteenth president, James Buchanan.
