Johnson defeated Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, a U.S. senator from Arizona, to win the election. Goldwater became a hero of the conservative movement after the publication of his book The Conscience of a Conservative (1960). Johnson trounced him in the election by an electoral vote count of 486 to 52.
