When the War of 1812 ended, Taylor was demoted back to captain. He resigned his commission and moved back to his Springfield plantation. But he preferred military over civilian life, and rejoined the army. His second cousin—now President James Madison—restored his rank and he was assigned to Fort Howard near Green Bay, Wisconsin.
