Why did he leave the 6th Circuit judgeship?

Taft left the 6th Circuit because President William McKinley appointed him to become commissioner of the Philippines. Taft had hoped that McKinley had called him to Washington, D.C., to offer him a position on the U.S. Supreme Court. Instead, Taft accepted the position with the understanding that if an opening arose on the Supreme Court, he would be strongly considered.
