Taylor opposed the spread of slavery. This surprised some because Taylor was from Louisiana and, previously, Kentucky. He also owned slavers on his large plantation. But Taylor was a strong nationalist, and feared that the slavery question would tear apart the union. He strongly disagreed with those Southerners who advocated for secession.
