Consider that each percent of the population (ages 12 and up) is equal to almost 2.5 million people. In other words, in 2007 more than 22 million people had some kind of substance abuse or dependence. These data come from the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health for subjects aged 12 or older conducted by SAMHSA, of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Substance abuse and dependence are based on DSM-IV criteria.
