Many interpreters associated the primal sin with sexuality and lust, but disagreed as to whether the descendants of Adam and Eve are merely deprived of original virtue or positively depraved and thus willfully wicked. More recently, exegetes and theologians have read the story of the Fall as a metaphor for the dawning of moral consciousness.
