What vehicles do the gods use to get around?

The principal “vehicles” (vahana) of the principal deities are as follows:

  • Shiva: the bull Nandi
  • Parvati: lion
  • Durga: lion, tiger, or parrot
  • Ganesha: mouse or rat
  • Skanda: peacock
  • Brahma: goose or swan
  • Vishnu: the eagle Garuda or the serpent Ananta
  • Lakshmi: owl
