Do both sides of DNA contain genes?

One strand of DNA contains the information that codes for genes, and it is called the “antisense strand” or “noncoding strand.” It is this strand that is transcribed into mRNA and is designated as the template strand. The other, complementary strand is called the “coding strand” (because it contains codons) or “sense strand.” Its sequence is identical to the mRNA strand, except for the substitution of U (uracil) for T (thymine).
