The average nucleus has a diameter of less than 5 micrometers, and the DNA (eukaryotic) has a length of 1–2 micrometers. In order to fit DNA into a nucleus, DNA and proteins are tightly packed to form threads called chromatin. These threads are so thick that they actually become visible with a light microscope.
